Junior Sister – OLOK (Permanent, 40 hours per week)
Job description:
• Responsibility for the co-ordination, assessment, planning, implementation and review of care for service users according to service standards.
• Contribute to the development and maintenance of nursing standards, protocols and guidelines consistent with the highest standards of patient care.
• Participate in teams as appropriate, communication and working in co-operation with other team members.
• Play a central role in maintaining a safe environment for service users, staff and visitors.
• To build consultant confidence in a new dedicated oncology service by working as a member of the multidisciplinary team.
• To provide support and assistance to the senior sister in the running of the assigned area(s).
• Take the role of Infection Prevention & Control Link Nurse for your work area.
• Assist in observing and ensuring implementation and adherence to established policies and procedures e.g. health and safety, infection control, storage and use of controlled drugs etc.
• Observe, Report and take appropriate action on any matter which may be detrimental to service user care or well being /may be inhibiting the efficient provision of care
• Engage in continuing professional development by keeping up to date with nursing literature, recent nursing research and new developments in nursing management, education and practice and to attend staff study days as considered appropriate
• Provide a high level of professional and clinical leadership
• Provide supervision and assist in the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes of staff
• Engage in performance review processes including personal development planning as appropriate
• Exercise authority in the running of the assigned area(s) as instructed by the senior sister.
• Ensure compliance with legal requirements, policies and procedures affecting service users, staff and other hospital matters
• This role also involves deputising for the Night Sister in her/his absence on a rotational basis.
Requirements:
• Current registration with An Bord Altranais
• BSc qualification preferred. Higher diploma or post graduate qualification in oncology desirable, management qualification also desirable
• 5 years Oncology nursing experience
• Good understanding of trajectory of cancer processes and pressures it places on patients and their families
• Have proven Clinical, Leadership, Managerial & Customer Care skills
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to motivate staff
• Flexibility in work practices. The candidate will be required to work 5 days per week. This may require working opposite a senior sister to ensure the ward is covered by a sister between 07.00 and 19.30hrs Monday to Friday. Weekend work and Evening work may also be required.
